About This Item

London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1789. Book. Very good- condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Quarto (4to). vi, ix-xii, 171 pages of text, followed by iii index and [i] errata; complete as issued. Illustrated by a large fold-out map and 17 plates. The date of publication is neatly handwritten at the bottom of the title page; previous owner's stamp twice on the title page and bookplate (circa 1910) on front pastedown endpaper: Henry Von Wackerbarth. Several light pencil notations in the margins. Rebound (circa 1910) but the leather is chipped, rubbed and worn, and would greatly benefit from a rebinding. Quarto, measuring 11 inches (28cm) in height. The pages were trimmed when rebound, and two of the botanical plates are trimmed with minor loss to the image at the top margin. One botanical plate is torn into the image area, with an early repair, with minor visible damage. The entirety of the text and plates are moderately affected by foxing, and the first two leaves are lightly soiled and/or stained. The fold-out map is creased from misfolding, but is intact and attractive..
