Brownish marbled paper covered boards with brown leather corners and spine. Gilt title, decorations, and raised bands on the spine. Marbled end papers. Marbled text edges. Illustrated with frontispiece engraving, steel engravings, illustrated plates, in text illustrations, and 11 folding maps. Text, maps and illustrations in very good condition. Occasional light foxing to a few of the steel engravings and the protective tissue. Light rubs to the board edges with light shelf wear to the covers. Binding is very sturdy and uniform. First edition, in three volumes, was published in 1856.
