About This Item

with illustrations of the Geology, Mineralogy, and Zoology. By Hugh Murray, Professor Jameson, and James Wilson. With a map, plans of the route of Park, and of Denham and Clapperton: and thirteen engravings by Branston. Fifth Edition. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, nd. [circa 1845] Olive green calf, Cr.8vo. 472pp. 13 illustrations, 3 maps ( 1 folding,) index. The first edition of this famous compilation was published at Edinburgh in 1799 by John Leyden, and Hugh Murray the geographer assisted in later editions and re-issues. As a eighteenth century moral philosopher Leyden was more interested in the manners and customs of the Africans rather than the achievements of travellers, and the book reflects this ethnological interest. During the first half of the nineteenth century, this became one of the most influential books on Africa, published in French as well as English editions, the last edition being published in 1853. Spine rubbing to head, a very nice copy in a contemporary green calf with spine gilt in compartments. We have been selling antiquarian books on Africa, Oceania, archaeology, anthropology, travel and the ancient world for over forty years. All our books are carefully catalogued and they are in excellent condition unless stated in the description. All shipments are fully insured at our expense. All books are carefully packaged in new packaging material and despatched by registered or recorded mail, or by a courier service; the customer is always able to track their shipment. All sales are accompanied by a VAT invoice. Photographs may be supplied if requested.[O]
