The Union of Polish Patriots' gift copy of Vasily Grossman's 1942 novel, The People Immortal.

The Union of Polish Patriots (Zwiazek Patriotow Polskich) was anti-fascist political organization, created by Polish communists with the support of Joseph Stalin in 1943. The aim of the organization was to fight against the Nazi occupiers and to create a people's democratic Polish state, that would rely on the implementation of Stalinism and the country's alliance with the Soviet Union.

Vasily Semyonovich Grossman (1905-1964) was a Russian writer and journalist of Jewish origins, who spent almost three years on the frontlines during World War II as a correspondent for the Soviet military paper Krasnaya Zvezda. He was one of the first journalists to write about the Nazi death camps. His article The Hell of Treblinka (1944) was disseminated at the Nuremberg Trials as evidence for the prosecution.
