London/ New York: Adam & Charles Black/The MacMillan Company, 1904 Hard cover, large 8vo, in publisher's maroon cloth binding with art nouveau style design of red, green and pink carnations in a vase, top edge gilt, Titles and top edge are gilt. 236pp + 4pp ads, first American edition, stated publication date June 1904. MacMillan listed as American sales agents. CONDITION: Very Good Minus. Spine is sunned, slight dulling to exterior decoration, as well as a drop of white paint on upper right cover. Hinges are fine, and text block is tight. Prelims are browned. Moderately foxed throughout, although the lovely color illustrations are clean, being on different paper stock. Labelled tissue guards protect the 80 full-page color illustrations' vibrant hues.**The book cover design is by Boston-born Albert Angus Turbayne (1866-1940) and contains his signature beetle cipher made of his initials "AT" on the bottom right of front board. Turbayne was considered one of the premier book binding designers of his day, winning third place at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. He would train other artists/ designers through his work at the London County School of Photoengraving and Lithography, and would go on to found the Carlton Studio. **Augustine and Sybil Fitzgerald, the book's illustrator and author, collaborated on this volume on one of their frequent trips abroad. She was originally trained as an opera singer, performing on the London stage. She was also a noted philatelist and donated a collection of airmail stamps to the British Museum. He graduated from Yale University. Reproductions of his art are still sold today. This is one of the more scarce titles of the Twenty Shilling Series, having a print run of only 2000 copies.
