About This Item

Ancient world 700Hahn, E. Adelaide, 1893-1967. Naming-constructions in some Indo-European languages. (Philological monographs of the American Philological Association, no. 27). [Cleveland]:Published for the American Philological Association by the Press of Case Western Reserve University, 1969, xxviii, 222p, bib, index. There are some minor droplets on the verso of the flyleaf with one on the title-page, the bottom tips of the back free endpapers are folded with the lining paper one glued to the cloth. It appears that the paper was folded in binding with one being glued. Else a clean, tight copy. $23.50

This is a study of a syntactic pattern used with such naming phrases as "there was a man named John" and "there was a man name of John" in Hittite, Sanskrit, Avestan, old Persian, Greek, Latin, Gothic, Old English, Old Irish, Middle Irish, Welsh Cornish, Breton, and Tocharian. The word for "name" appears in an ambiguous nominative-accusative form in several of these languages. While this has usually been interpreted as an "accusative of specification," Dr, Hahn sees it, rather, in "partitive" apposition with the word for "man." This proposition is developed with great erudition through discussions of numerous passages in the various languages, with copious illustrative citations. There are notes containing interesting peripheral observations, not only on syntax but on other matters as well.
