Upper text edge dyed blue. Blank map of the United States to front endpaper; the same with names added to rear endpaper. Story of the naming of places and the heritage they convey by historian George R. Stewart (1895 - 1980) who gave us the scholarly reconstruction of the ill-fated Donner Party's attempt to negotiate the Sierras, Ordeal by Hunger. Quote, from Francis Bacon, on title page : "Name, though it seem but superficial and outward matter, yet it carrieth much impression and enchantment". Author George Stewart says: "From the names might be known how how here one man hoped and struggled, how there another dreamed, or died, or sought fortune, and another joked" --- for instance, there a place named Troublesome Creek, and, with turbulent waters since true love rarely runs smooth.
