About This Item

New York: The Beechhurst Press, (c. 1955). Hardcover. Very good/poor. Werth, Kurt. Translated from the Yiddish by Moshe Spiegel. Illustrated by Kurt Werth. Octavo, green cloth covers, 223 pages. Covers slightly sunned at edges. Dust jacket split at folds, chipped, tears, poor. 121901A "First published in Vilna in the year 1873, The Nag is one of the best examples of the work of the celebrated Yiddish writer who won fame under the pen-name of Mendele the Book Peddler. One hundred years ago, Mendele was well known to the Jews of Russia and Poland as a man who traveled from town to town in a horse-drawn cart, selling books, listening to everyone's troubles, and writing stories about them. These Jews knew Mendele well--so well that they also knew there was no such person. Mendele the Book Peddlar was the fictional creation of Sholem Jacob Abramovitch.
