About This Item
Paris, 1840. Loose_leaf. Very Good -. Hand colored lithograph on heavy, ivory colored, wove paper. Sheet size: 29 x 37.5 cm. Full title and caption underneath reads: "Un homme du vieux temps. Plus de moeurs, plus de religion! voila ce que c'est d'avoir lache la bride a l'esprit humain". [A Man of Old Times. No more morals, no more religion! that is what it is to have let go of the human spirit.]. Print Condition: could use a professional cleaning; moderate to heavy spotting and foxing, though heaviest along edges out of picture safety. Worn at edges with small closed edge tears, verso with paper remains from former mounting in a half a dozen spots. Fundamentally a very strong impression; colors are vibrant and vivid without the oxidization and dulling that can affect this series. Inscription below title and caption reads: "Paris, chez Ostgervald aine, quai des Augustins, No. 37; Rittner Boulevard-Montmartre, No.12; a Hautcoeur-Martinet, rue de Coq." Signature below image reads: "CJ. Travies" then "Lith. de Ducarne". for Lithographer, Pierre Francois Ducarne. From Wikipedia: "Charles-Joseph Traviès de Villers, also known simply as Traviès, (21 February 1804 - 13 August 1859) was a Swiss-born French painter, lithographer, and caricaturist whose work appeared regularly in Le Charivari and La Caricature.
