About This Item

London: Fowler, 1938. First Edition. Hard Cover. (London: L. N. Fowler & Co., Ltd., [1938]). First UK Edition. Publisher's black boards with white lettering to the front board and spine. Green top-edge. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR'S HUSBAND - AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHT - GARLAND ANDERSON (!886-1939). Photographic portrait frontispiece of the author, and two other full-page photographs of Garland Anderson and of the couple leaving Honolulu. A VG+ or better copy; some light spotting to the page block edges and to a much lesser extent to both sets of end-papers. Inscribed by Garland Anderson (the author's husband) to the front free end-paper: 'All/ Success from Garland Anderson to Mrs A. Hawkesford'. No dustwrapper. An impressionistic account of an inter-racial marriage between a white English woman and the black American Playwright Garland Anderson whose play Appearances was the first series play by a black writer to be produced on Broadway, in 1925, where it ran for twenty-three performances before being transferred to London. A pioneer playwright and moralistic philosopher of constructive thinking, Garland Anderson was the Active in the theatre for over 10 years during the 1920s and 1930s, he achieved national prominence as “the San Francisco Bellhop Playwright.”. First editions of this offensively-titled first edition turn up occasionally signed and/or inscribed by the Author (Doris Garland Anderson). However, it is exceedingly uncommon - indeed scarce - to find inscribed by Garland Anderson himself. Looks very smart in its custom-made acetate wrapper. Photographs/scans available upon request.
