About This Item
London: Thames and Hudson, 1954. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. VG(+)/Good. A. W. Watts (text drawings). Green cloth with gilt sp. lettering and central front logo, marred only by slight rubbing to bottom sp. and bottom fr. corner. ix + 262, 8 plates on 4 pp. ex-pagination, 19 text figs + 7 chapter headpieces; heraldic book-plate to fr. pastedown of Allen Buckworth Barnes ('Defur gloria soli Deo) and small pencil sig. 'A B Barnes' top corner fr. end-paper, inner sides of both end-papers tanned, offset from jacket wrapaounds, and possibly common to most copes, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked. Unclipped jacket complete but all edges fairly heavily rubbed with chips to extremities, tears to joints and edge nicks now internally closed with archival tear-repair tape, some brown marks to back will add protective sleeve when ordered. This is the 2nd, March, printing, it having first been issued in January published in January 1954 (not 1953 as the Wikipedia entry has it). Perhaps the most scholarly and academic of Watts's many works but a bracing and provocative read.. Very scarce, especially with jacket in any condition. Issued in publisher's 'Myth and Man' series 14 cm x 22 cm.
