About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz,, 1929. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine in orange. With dust jacket. Endpapers tanned, light spotting to edges. An excellent copy in a slightly sunned jacket with a few small nicks and creases to extremities, and a small chip to front panel. First Gollancz edition, first impression. Publisher's file copy with relevant markings to dust jacket and front free endpaper. The work was first published in French as Le Crime d'Orcival in 1867. The scarce and striking jacket declares: "Arnold Bennett gave it as his opinion in the Evening Stardard of the 3rd May 1928 that Gaboriau's The Mystery of Orcival is one of the 2 French Masterpieces of Detective Fiction". A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone title. The story was first published in English in America in 1871, and in the UK in 1883.
