Boston: Henry L. Shepard. 1875. Octavo, cloth boards, b&w frontis portrait plate of Jules Verne with facsimile signature, 42 b&w plates, Pirated edition? published in same year as first edition. Rebound in red cloth with paler red design, by Wells Bindery of Waltham Massachusetts in 1942 (small stamp rear free endpaper). Inscription and light red staining to front free endpaper, some minor staining to title-page. and fronts., rubbed to fore-edge of spine, corners lightly bumped and rubbed. Very good condition. The adventures of a group of Americans, who flee the Civil War in a balloon and are cast away on an island, which is eventually revealed to be Captain Nemo's hideout and home port of the Nautilus (from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea). The first part of a three part series. Boards.
