About This Item
Rothomagi [Rotterdam], sumptibus Ionnis & Davidis Berthelin, 1653. Folio. pp. [xxxii], cols. 1624, 104, pp. [xxiii]. Greek and Latin parallel text. Eighteenth-century mottled calf, spine gilt. Edges sprinkled red. Top and bottom of spine damaged, hinges cracked but holding well. Bookplates on inside front cover and first flyleaf, some tiny manuscript notes in ink in an old hand on the first and last flyleaves. Some browning and foxing. Old repair on F4 but all in all a good copy.
Photius (c. 810/820 - 893), one of the most powerful and influential church leaders of Constantinople, is also viewed as the most important intellectual of his time. His house was the centre of intellectual life in the Byzantine capital. The Myriobyblon contains abridgements and extracts of some 280 volumes of classical authors, the originals of which are now to a great extent lost and for which this is the most important surviving record. The best edition of this important work. [c.f. Brunet IV, 624; Peignot 579].
