Appleton, 1845. 177 pages + (14) pages of publishers announcements at back, with pagination numbers on half of the pages only; frontispiece engraving of a funeral procession, shrouded casket and pall-bearers, in a country scene, illustrated title page vignette of horse & covered wagon and a 'town worthy or parson figure; good examplar of an earlier nineteenth century inspirational story for youth; Mary Howitt (1799-1888) author; nee Botham; married William Howitt (wrote of Australia after three years there & many other writings) and collaborated with him in many works; published translations from Frederika Bremer and Hans Andersen and successful children's books. (DNB); previous owner penciled names on endpapers; bound in publisher's brown decoratively blindstamped and gilt-spined cloth, lilac endpapers; some light foxing to text; some edge, tips wear to binding; overall, good condition. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good.
