Ethel Stefana Stevens, who is also known under her married name Ethel Stefana Drower, was a cultural anthropologist who specialised in the Middle East and its cultures. She was the primary specialist on the Mandaeans during her time and was the chief collector of Mandaean manuscripts. To the preface Stevens notes that this book's intentions is the 'convey to the tourist or fireside traveller something of the interest and charm of the Sudan in an unambitious form.'
