1864. First Edition. Hard Cover. (Edinburgh: Edmonston & Douglas 1864). First UK Edition. xix, 484 pages. 7 plates including frontispiece, illustrated title page with some colour. Some foxing, particularly to the early pages of the book and to the illustrations otherwise clean internally. This copy has been exquisitely rebound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full brown morocco with 5 raised bands to the spine, title, author and decorations in gilt to the spine. Gilt vignette of an elephant's head to the front board. Gilt border to both the front and rear boards. All edges gilt. Marbled end-papers. The binding is signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe to the bottom edge of the front paste-down. Slight discolouration to the left hand edge of the front board otherwise a fine binding. NB: this is a rebind of the first edition from 1864. This book would grace any library of fine travel books. Sangorski & Sutcliffe are the Rolls Royce of Bookbinding and are widely considered to be one of the most important bookbinding companies of the 20th century. Photographs/scans available upon request.
