About This Item

Chicago: The Book House for Children, 1937. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Thus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Complete in (12) volumes, bound in varied hues of green and blue cloth, lettered in gilt, each volume with a color front cover pastedown illus. This less common binding variant is usually referred to as the "Rainbow edition" to distinguish it from the standard uniform dark blue binding variant. Mild rubbing to corners and spine extremities, some surface rubbing as well, with pastedowns generally showing light scratching, several more advanced, but overall still a presentable set. Some covers tanning toward edges, typical of issue. Firm bindings. Text block edges somewhat dulled and with mild foxing, interiors generally clean with scattered light soiling here and there. Each volume shows a gift inscription inked inside front cover, dated Sept. 1939. Condition ranges Good to Near Fine, averaging VG..

Reviews

On Mar 29 2018, a reader said:
Reading is one of my first memories. I vividly recall lying on the floor of my grandfather's library and pulling

an old black bound book off the shelf. I am not sure which of the MY BOOKHOUSE books it was, but I know

it had a beautifully detailed painting on the front cover, and inside, it smelled of the 1920's and had that

slightly yellow color of well-worn paper. Even touching the very first few pages, I was already taken in by

the magic that awaited me. Stories for children, or forever children, from different cultures, and different eras

were my summer companions each year from the time I was eight. More than playing with the requisite dolls

or even friends, the MY BOOKHOUSE compilations were never far away from me. Admittedly this was a time

long before technology became the way to instantly gratify the desire for entertainment, but I feel so

fortunate to have grown up during those years when a book would accompany me to the doctor's office or

on a road trip, instead of an iPad or smartphone.

And so my passion for reading has never waned. My children who did grow up with the phones and other

devices still were required to 'bring a book' when we left the house each day. I know this early fascination

with reading has been responsible for all of us in my family to be, not only lifelong learners but lovers of

lifelong learning.

About Saucony Book Shop

The Saucony Book Shop, located in the heart of scenic rural Berks County, epicenter of Pennsylvania German folk culture (our shop specialty), offers a full range of gently used, rare, and antiquarian books, with many volumes of scholarly merit and an unabashed emphasis on the quaint, the curious, and the utterly obscure. We make no attempt to be a general-service book shop. Our inventory is highly selective, individually chosen from among the hundreds of thousands of books to which we have access annually at auctions, library and estate sales, and through individual scouts and vendors. We do not handle material that does not meet our expectations in terms of condition or interest to our specialized, idiosyncratic customers. Despite maintaining a browsing inventory of more than 15,000 volumes, we have minimized our carbon footprint by maintaining our entire operation in a cozy ca. 1890 barn and lean-to adjacent to an historic creamery in rural Maxatawny Township. Our shop is available for browsing by appointment and occasionally, in temperate weather, by chance, so email or call ahead to peruse the eclectic selection gracing our shelves, or ask our ferociously over-read staff for recommendations. Selling antiquarian books of merit since 1981. Full search and appraisal services; always keenly interested in purchasing quality used books, whether by the piece or by the bushel. Thanks for reading about us! Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
