In 1879, Cushing, as a Smithsonian Institution staff member, travelled to Zuni to study the ethnology of its people. During his 4 1/2 years in residence, he learned to speak the Zuni language, beame a member of the tribe and fully immersed himself in the culture, becoming anthropology's first participant observer. This was the beginning of his lifelong fascination and work with the Zuni culture. Originally published in Century Magazine installments during 1882-83, this printing includes an introductory essay 'Zuni and Cushing' by E. DeGolyer and 'An Aboriginal Pilgrimage' by Sylvester Baxter, a report of the trip made to Washington and Boston by a group of Zuni chieftains.
