This book being #174 of an edition of 550 copies. The book was set in English Monotype Scotch at Golgonooza Letter Foundry by Julia Ferrari and Dan Carr. Text printed by Heritage Printers on paper made at Carterie Enrico Magnani. Photographs by Aaron Siskind who also signed the book. Photogravure plates made by Paul Taylor and printed them with Clary Nelson at Renaissance Press on Richard de Bas paper. The book is NF with only some fading on the spine. The slipcase is VG with some fraying and sunning on the spine. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Signed by Illustrator .

Wynton Marsalis brings a 3rd dimension, who composed a 30min interpretation of Angelou's as a celebration of Jazz. A CD of the composition, which includes Maya Angelou reading her poem is included in a special compartment of the case. The book was very well received by critics, Michael Kimmelman from the New York Times, dedicated almost the entire front page of the April 26th 2002 edition to Mitchell's art. Book comes in one volume 23 x 20 inches, with a CD by Wynton Marsalis and Maya Angelou. This copy being #249 of 400, signed by Angelou, Mitchell and Marsalis. Slipcase in NF condition, with a small mark on the front cover. Book as new. Laid in is the original Monthly Newsletter #592 and the LEC invoice for $4000. Four poems in the original French and the English translation printed in letterpress on textured Arches paper and printed by The Wild Carrot Press. The book includes 5 silkscreen prints from Lois Mailou Jones, one of America's most celebrated Black artist. Four of Senghor poems appears in this edition. Leopold Senghar became the first Black member ever induced into the French Academy. In 1960 he was elected the first president of Senegal and re-elected four times. As a poet, he represented the literary and artistic expression of the Black African experience. This volume is #171 of 300 and signed by both Senghar and Jones. The first of the special edition releases by LEC, released in an edition of 452 copies and signed by the Author WA Dwiggins, this being #280 of 452. Certainly, one of the harder titles to find in the LEC line-up. This was an issue Dwiggins felt very strongly about and he discusses the atrocities of design in currency and postage stamps of the time and proposes new ones based on those issued by the fictional country of Antipodes. This particular copy has been professionally rebacked, preserving the original boards. Boards shows some wear at the corners. The book shows not foxing, but occasional smudges on some of the internal pages. VG overall condition, without slipcase. A decent copy of a very scare title at an attractive price. Maya Angelou created this book for the Limited Editions Club: she wrote the poem, she selected the artist, the award-winning water colorist Dean Mitchell, and asked Wynton Marsalis to compose and then perform an original jazz composition just for this book (a CD copy is tucked into the solander box). Mitchell wrote an Afterword, relating his composition to the poetry.The book was designed, typeset, and printed by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari. Carol Joyce bound the book and the solander box in a matching tan fabric with morocco labels for the book and the spine of the box.
The book has six color etchings created by Mitchell and printed by Peter Pettengill. Marsalis and his sextet performed the work, with Angelou reciting her poem. Signed by Angelou, Mitchell, and Marsalis. As New. History LEC p. 239.
