About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Sara Woods: Woods did her writing in Canada, but all her novels were set in her native England. She created three short detective series under three different pseudonyms, but her main claim to fame is the 48 novels in the Anthony Maitland series. This is #41 of that series.

Charlotte MacLeod: MacLeod was a Canadian/American writer of mysteries, some of the cozy variety, the others more thrillers. She created a total of four series, two under the pen name of Alisa Craig. All told, she published 43 novels, two collections and two works of non fiction, although one of those was about Astrology, so that's really fiction, too. MacLeod died in 2005. This is the fifth novel of ten in the Professor Peter Shandy series.

Jeffrey Ashford: A pseudonym of Roderic Jeffries. Jeffries published under his own name as well as four other pen names. A British mystery writer, Jeffries has published over 150 novels, including five detective series. The longest is the Inspector Alvarez series, involving 37 novels. Now in his nineties, Jeffries last published a novel in 2013.
