London: John Long Limited, 1939. BG3 - A first edition (First published 1939 stated) hardcover book in good condition in fair dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket has wrinkling, chipping, crease, some soiled patches, tears and taped tears on the edges and corners, large soiled patche with chipping and scuffing on the lower spine, scattered wrinkling, scratches, rubbing, scuffing, and stains, tanning, and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners and dents, wrinkling on the spine edges, some cover edgewear, scattered foxing and stains on the page edges, some chipping/peeling on the front endpaper hinge, end-to-end curvy horizontal taped tear on page 187 with some chipping, wrinkling and crease on some edges and corner, some scattered wrinkling and stains, tanning and shelf wear. Although not marked in any way, this copy comes from the personal collection of Otto Penzler, legendary editor and founder of the Mysterious Press, an award-winning icon in the genre. 7.5"x5", 256 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. THIS is a thriller that is different. The reader watches the murderer commit his crimes and feels the pressure of circumstances which drive him to these lengths. The first murder is ingeniously committed with articles which are to be found in every household, and is so carried out as to be the perfect crime, leaving the murderer unsuspected. Yet as a result of this murder the necessity arises for a further crime. As a result the police machine begins to work and the action moves rapidly to different part of the country, giving thrills in plenty, and as the drama unfolds the reader is carried onward to a superb climax. The characters are drawn with a sympathetic pen, and lift this novel above the usual type of thriller. The motives which encourage ordinary law-abiding people to assist the murderer to escape his pursuers make interesting reading, and the intriguing nature of the story promises a thrilling time to all who read it..
