Mrs Pringle, the lugubrious school cleaner, has always been a favourite character in the Fairacre series. Here, through the eyes and anecdotes of the schoolmistress,Miss Read, and others,we trace Maud Pringle's life from childhood visits to the village from her Caxley home, through her working days before her marriage to Fred Pringle, and on to her long association with Fairacre School. We meet again many old friends as they cross Mrs Pringle's path: Mr Willet the caretaker; the ever-patient vicar Mr Partridge; Miss Clare, now retired; Mrs Pringle's feather-witted niece Minnie; and Miss Read's friend Amy,still matchmaking (in vain). Together with Mrs P - infuriating, endearing, but safely trapped within covers - their adventures make another enchanting excursion to Fairacre that will delight Miss Read's devoted followers. Goodall or J.S. Goodall.Born Heacham,Norfolk, son of a heart specialist.Leaving Harrow School,he worked in the studios of Sir Arthur Cope RA and E.Watson Nicol under whom he 'was taught with loving care to be a mid-Victorian art student'. He also studied under Harold Speed and at the Royal Academy Schools (c1930.)Served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment (1939- 46).Concentrated on line drawing in the 1930's,began painting in watercolours while stationed in India at the end of WW2.Since which, his extensive travels (e.g. twice around the world in a cargo boat) provided him with many landscape subjects; he also paints conversation pieces and late 19thC pastiches in watercolour and gouache. As an illustrator he works in b/w (sometimes in silhouette) and full colour, turning his 'Victorian' early training to good account in evocative period tableaux. In his wordless picture books he has evolved an effective method of telling stories by means of half-pages placed between each double-page spread. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
