Cincinnati: Middleton, Strobridge, & Co, 1859. Portrait. Steel plate engraving. Image measures 5 1/2" x 4"<br/> <br/> Mrs. Ann Wilkins was a notable figure in the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.) and its missionary work in Western Africa during the 19th century. She volunteered as a missionary to Liberia in 1837, where she worked as an educator at the White Plains Manual Labor School and at the Liberia Conference Seminary. She also founded the Female Boarding School at Millsburg in 1839. She remained in Liberia until 1856. This portrait was engraved by J.C. Buttre and printed by Middleton, Strobridge, & Co., was published in The Ladies Repository of 1859. In very good condition, with some scattered foxing.<br/> <br/>
