About This Item
NY: Knopf, 1961. First Edition . Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First printing of the author's first book, which won the National Book Award in 1961. Very good to near fine in a very good dust jacket. Tiny, insignificant mark to the bottom edge of the page block (not a remainder mark); very slight bump to top front corner. The jacket has light edgewear and a small internal mend at the top of the spine. $3.95 price is present on front flap. Signed by the author on the title page. With a short, two page ALS dated July 10, 1961, tipped to the front pastedown: Percy declines to contribute to the magazine SHOW (which is in its early days). The recipient of the letter was the original owner of this copy, which bears both his signature and his bookplate. Finally, affixed to the front endpaper opposite the letter is a very short clipping: "This is one of the poems of Walker Percy, student at Greenville High School, which won first honors in the State High School Press Association contests." The poem is printed in the clipping, and appears to date from the 1930's. Letters from Percy contemporary with his first book are very uncommon. An exceptional copy of this groundbreaking novel, housed in a custom clamshell box with leather spine.
Synopsis
The Moviegoer was published in 1961 by Walker Percy. This novel tells the story of Binx Bolling, a young businessman in New Orleans after the Korean war who feels alienated from his own life. His life is full of daydreams, and he tends to find more meaning in movies and books than in his own routine life.
