About This Item
New York: New York: American Art-Union, 1851. First printing. Print. An image by John Kensett, Hudson River artist, published by the American Art Union (1839-1851), an organization created to support contemporary American art and to develop a popular appreciation of it. By 1849, they had almost 19,000 subscribers. The AAU is well known today for the thirty-six engravings it published based on the paintings of some of the most luminous names in American art, e.g. George Caleb Bingham, Thomas Cole, F.O.C. Darley, R.C. Woodville and Asher B. Durand.
Kensett was a member of the second generation of the Hudson River School of artists. Inspired by Thomas Cole, his landscapes of New England and New York State depict a clear light and serene surfaces celebrating transcendental qualities of nature, and are associated with Luminism. He was a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Wikipedia). James Smillie was a well revered engraver.
Printed area 9 x 10 1/2" with full plate mark and large margins, paper 14 5/8 x 18". Some very faint occasional wrinkles with a couple of small marginal tears supported on the verso. Overall, very good condition.
