About This Item

McGraw-Hill, 1966. hardcover. Good/Very Good. 0x0x0. 1966 first edition, McGraw-Hill (New York), 6 x 8 5/8 inches tall hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, purple paper-covered boards over navy blue spine, 250 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with substantial wear to the spine caps, front and rear joints and tips. Slight soiling to page edges. Inside, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly soiled and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~SP19~ [2.0P] A classic 1960s underground comic novel, whose title served as the name for an iconic 1970s British rock band. The book is a farcical, often overlooked late 60's tragi-comic masterpiece, capturing the anti-corporate mainstream view of youth in those days. The book's title is a modification of 'Martha Hoople,' the name of a character from the comic strip Our Boarding House, which was widely syndicated in American newspapers from 1921 to 1984. In the context of the book, the author uses the word 'Hoople' to refer to Squares, conventional people – those who 'make the whole game possible, Christmas Clubs especially, politics, advertising agencies, pay toilets, even popes and mystery novels.' Protagonist Norman Mott is not a Hoople, and has various adventures in the comic novel, which is a contemporary commentary on religion, war and peace, the South, race, and so forth.
