George Augustus Sala has an anecdote about Artemus Ward (a pseudonym of Charles Farrar Browne) and Utah in his 3 page Introduction - "It was on the occasion of a convivial meeting of New York journalists at a place in Houston Street, called 'The House of Lords,' on which occasion. I remember, a mighty bowl of punch was brewed, on the hospitable assumption that it was the beverage most grateful to the British palate. I was well night breathless to hear the strange revelations which A. W. must have to make about the Mormon Territories. Mr. Browne is not averse from punch, discreetly brewed; and as he tasted his first jorum, he remarked that he had had a 'very good time in Utah,' and that 'there was a good deal of this sort of thing,' meaning the punch - an observation which I scarcely found compatible with the statement that no spirituous liquors are allowed to be sold in the City of the Saints. But I daresay there is a 'good deal of this sort of thing' everywhere [. . .]" .
