About This Item

New York: Basic Books, 1978. First Edition & First Printing . Cloth. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. New York: Basic Books, 1978. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, 214 pp., red cloth with black spine imprinting. Fine book in fine, unclipped jacket. Gardner's then-controversial chastisement of writers and other artists, who, he felt, provided vacuous "meaning" in their works pursuant to an engrained too-ethically-neutral view of the universe. An author's goal, he felt, was to take moral stands, especially on social issues. This sounds low, superficial, subjective and parochial, now - after decades of socially preachy books and movies executed at the expense of all the other pathways the universe holds to be explored with art. At the time, however, it was a reasonable protest against the vain and rather lazy prevailing attitude of "anything-goes, and anything-is-art" in both literary circles and western culture in general. In retrospect, it may have been better had his condemnation been based on a of lack of soul in literature, rather than a lack of morality, since the latter was never meant to be more than one direction for art, and is already an overdone one. A seminal piece for endless discussion. L16n
