About This Item

London: André Deutsch, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. Signed Sixth Impression of "one of the very best Booker winners." (The Guardian). 8vo: [6],208pp. Publisher's Prussian blue cloth, spine stamped in gold; illustrated dust jacket by Jenny Tylden-Wright, priced £9.95. Signed by the author on the title page, without inscription. About Fine (former owner's name in ink on fly-leaf), firmly bound, contents clean and bright; about Fine jacket (barely perceptible degree of browning to top edge), vividly colored. Moon Tiger, Lively's tenth novel for adults, spans the years before, during, and after the Second World War. It is written from multiple points of view and moves backward and forward through time, beginning as the story of a woman who, on her deathbed, decides to write a history of the world, and developing into a novel of love, incest, and the desire to be recognized as an independent freethinker. Lively explained to the BBC that the curious object that gives Moon Tiger its title was a mosquito repellent used during her childhood in Egypt. "The Moon Tiger is a green coil that slowly burns all night, repelling mosquitoes, dropping away into lengths of grey ash, its glowing red eye a companion of the hot insect-rasping darkness." The Moon Tiger also seems symbolic of the novel's narrative structure and the way memories live in our minds. N. B.
