Umber paper-covered boards with a black cloth spine; gilt titling on the spine and Dreiser's signature in gilt on the front cover. Clean text; xi, 385 pages. There are fifteen "symbols" by Hugh Gray Lieber. Light soil, mildly bumped, light rub to spine margins. A solid copy, somewhat less common than the limited version. Lacking the dustjacket.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Hugh Gray Lieber. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Publisher's original 3/4 black cloth and patterned paper with copper only decorations over boards, red paper spine label and gilt chevrons to spine, rough cut edges. Book Condition: spine label lacking, ditto any and all gilt to spine; covers still nice and sparkly with their gold onlay; interior pages bright and unmarred. Binding very sound with no sign of the loose hinges that seem to plague this title. Lacking the slipcase. "This edition ... is ... limited to 550 numbered copies signed by the author, of which 535 are for sale"--Page [ii]. Theodore Dreiser was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature in 1930; though as it turned out, that was the year that the prize was awarded to Sinclair Lewis.

With Fifteen Symbols By Hugh Gray Lieber. Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight); little wear (few small, shallow chips; two small, light stains on spine; $3.00 price is present on the front flap) d/j.

A near fine copy, slightly rubbed and bumped in very good dust jacket with a few small nicks and short tears, else quite fresh and bright. Due to tremendous demand, this trade edition was published two years after the 1926 limited edition.
