The book contains multiple hand inscriptions that are only partially legible.The pencil inscription on the front flyleaf contains references to Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as the years: 1911 and 1914. It is possible that the text in some way refers to the Bosnian crisis which served as a prelude to WWI. But, since we have not been able to translate the entire text, we cannot be certain of the context. Antonio Jr. also published the final two volumes of Fausto and Felice Niccolini's monumental book on the interior design of Pompeii, Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei (Houses and monuments of Pompeii), 1854-1897, after the brothers' death in 1886. He also published a book of reconstructions of Roman life in the city, Pompeii: Essaies et Restaurations, 1898.
Half leather binding with six raised bands, gilt title on spine, marble boards and endpapers, binding solid. Rear board with water damage affecting the last 10 plates, but 140 plates with vibrant colour in fine condition.

The title page is mounted and heavily restored from a much earlier time; it is age-toned and there is much staining of the surface, possibly from the glue used to repair ? The first few pages are fragile at the leading edge and lacking a few small pieces; the remaining pages are age-toned and occasionally slightly marked or stained, certainly used but overall quite sound with no tears or loss. Later calf with simple gilt decorated line, with some cracking and wear, fairly recently re-backed with a new calf spine, blind-stamped. Front and rear hinges cracked, but no weakness. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.
