Scarce in the trade in this state and condition, being an at least Fair condition exemplar, being Number 94 of only 100 copies printed in the Large Paper edition, thus a First Edition Thus. Big, tall, Imperial octavo hardcover format, gray paper over boards, one-quarter vellum, and augmented with 56 illustrations from old woodcuts. Paper soiled a bit, tips and edges scuffed, spine head and foot, ditto, paper title label soiled and abraded a bit, rough-cut fore- and bottom-edges, else tightly bound and bright of interior. From the personal library of the noted erotophile, bibliographer, folklorist, literary sleuth and former book scout, Gershon Legman, whose inimitable signature graces the heavily toned first free endpaper. An impressive collection of scurrilous, historical, erotic, political, geographical, social, mythological and sea street ballads, with a special focus on Queen Anne, she having been the focus of another biography by John Ashton. Replete with numerous in-text illustrations in black-and-white ballad headers. Illustrated frontispiece, tissue-protected, of an old woman proclaiming, "Fifty songs for a far-r-r-r-den." All in, a good, sturdy exemplar of an important work in English ethnomusicology.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
