About This Item
New York: William D. Smith, 1841. leather_bound. Orig. brown roan rebacked with original black spine gilt label. Very good. 119 pages in text. 30 25.5 cm. Small folio, frontispiece, plates 1-53, 56-88. Glossary of Technical Terms. HITCHCOCK 693. KARPEL B107. "Asher Benjamin and Minard Lafever were the two architectural authors most influential in the development of the Greek Revival in America. Both had minds of compelling creative power; Lafever's was perhaps the most imaginative. The present book shows his mature style, with its characteristically delicate rosettes, anthemions, and favored Ionic order. This work contains the first appearance of the two house designs of the `temple-type with wings,' which exerted an enormous influence all over the United States." All editions are scarce. Owner inscription title page head and bookplate of E.K. Milliken. Some toning located mostly at fore-edge and at head and tail margins. Front cover repair.
