About This Item
Londres, 1803.
2 parts in two 16mo volumes [141 x 88 mm] of: I/ 1 frontispiece, (2) ll., 253 pp., 12 plates out of pagination; II/ (2) ll., 1 frontispiece, 161 pp., 10 engravings out of pagination, (1) bl. l.
Quarter brown morocco, spine ribbed with gilt fillets, untrimmed. Binding from the nineteenth century.
Precious copy of this reprint, under a new title, of the illustrious "Portier des Chartreux".
"Gervaise de Latouche (born in Moreuil, Somme, on November 26, 1715, died in Paris in November 1782), lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, had placed all his fortune in the house of Guémené, which went into a resounding bankruptcy. He wrote very licentious works: 'Mémoires de Mlle Bonneval', Amsterdam, 1738; 'Hist.
Hoefer, G.E. - D.L.F., 18th century.
A successful novel by the lawyer at the Parliament of Paris Gervaise de La Touche, published around 1741, this book relates the life of Saturnin, nicknamed "Dom Bougre" by himself, who ended his life as a porter in a convent of monks from Chartreuse. The title of this successful book will vary according to the reeditions: such as Histoire de Gouberdom (anagram of "Dom Bougre"), or Histoire de Saturnin, Portier des Chartreux.
It is magnificently illustrated with 24 very free figures of the painter Antoine Borel, not signed, engraved by François Rolland Elluin, which take again those of the edition of Cazin of 1787.
Pia declares that these engravings are among the best ever made to illustrate this classic of eroticism.
A precious copy, complete with its 24 free figures, preserved wide-margined as untrimmed.
