FIRST EDITION in two parts, complete,1814, 8vo, approximately 215 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5 ¼ inches, pages: xxxii, 1-192; 193-528 including index and errata, bound in full calf, original covers with double gilt ruled borders, rebacked to style, richly gilt in compartments, maroon gilt lettered morocco label, faint marbling to edges, gilt inner dentelles (turn ins), original marbled endpapers retained. Endpapers faintly foxed, neat inscription dated 1846 on second blank front endpaper, small chip to 1 lower margin, due to paper flaw. A very good clean sturdy copy of the first edition. William Dickson (1751-1823) of Moffat in Scotland drove the Abolitionist campaign there. He had been in Barbados as the secretary to the Governor for 13 years and saw slaves being overworked, brutally punished and executed without a proper trial. When he came back to London he offered his services to the Abolitionist Society. He was sent to Scotland, which he turned into a powerhouse for the movement.
