Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Solid text block, faint soiling to yellow boards, a near fine example. In publisher's first state dust jacket, $2.95 on front flap, soiling to spine, closed tear on rear panel, a very good example. (Pringle, page 15) An attractive example. This novel is one of three works by Clement which were first serialized in Astounding Science Fiction magazine [Needle (1950), Iceworld (1953) and Mission of Gravity (1954)]. Three sequels to Mission of Gravity were published, a novel titled Star Light (1970), a short story in 1973 called "Lecture Demonstration" and a short story in 2000 titled "Under." Hal Clement was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998. This novel was nominated for a "Retro-Hugo" Award in 1954.

Synopsis

Mission of Gravity is a science fiction novel by Hal Clement. The title is a play on words, involving two uses of the word "Gravity," one meaning "Gravity, the force which pulls" and the other being ", extremely serious or important". The novel was serialized in Astounding Science Fiction magazine in April–July 1953. Its first hardcover book publication was in 1954, and it was first published as a paperback book in 1958.
