About This Item

New York:: William Morrow, 1975.. Book Club Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: turquoise binding; the spine is slightly slanted otherwise a Very Good boo, with a Good dust jacket.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Description: Panoramic dust jacket art by David K Stone. In the closing weeks of 1879 Miss Martha Mary Crawford had not yet reached her twentieth birthday, but she shouldered a burden of care and responsibility heavy enough to daunt a much older woman. From the time her mother had died four years before, she had functioned both as mother to her siblings and as mistress of The Habitation, the Crawford property by the River Tyne in Northumberland. It was a formidable task as the estate was badly run down, and fortunes in decline. Then when her father died, it was found that he had squandered the remaining money on a mistress, and the family was impoverished. In that moment she learned things about herself. She had sacrificed her youth, was she going to sacrifice her future as well? Rear gutter code ''G 11'' indicates a printing date of March, 1976.
