About This Item

Philadelphia & London: J.B. Lippincott Co., 1905. 8vo. xvii, [1], 363, [1] pp. Colour frontisp., 2 colour plates, 6 black & white plates, colour woodcut borders & illustrations throughout by Eva M. Nagel. Pictorial white cloth publisher’s binding, delicate Japanese-inspired cover art of Miss Cherry-Blossom and blossoms above in pink, olive green & black, ruled in olive green & black, by Edward Stratton Holloway, w/ initial “H” in lower left corner, t.e.g. (very minor thumbing, dustsoiling, slight wear to corners), still a VG bright copy. Second edition, of this beautifully printed title re-released soon before the appearance of the famed opera “Madame Butterfly” by Puccini, based on the earlier short story, and David Belasco’s Herald Square Theatre production in 1900. Originally issued in 1895, this was Long’s first published work and was based on the observations and letters with his sister Mrs. Irwin Correll, the wife of a missionary to Japan. Holloway (1859-1939) was a noted Philadelphia artist, cover art designer, and art director for the J.B. Lippincott Co. publishing house for 46 years. Eva M. Nagel was also noted for her illustrations and cover art for the Betty Wales series books issued by Penn Publishing, by Margaret Warde.
