England: n.p., 1831. Hardcover. Very Good. [England: c.1821-1831]. 8vo (158 x 95mm). Paginated to p. 73, with additional c. 30 pages (although only half full). Written in brown ink in a uniform print and cursive hand in English, Latin and some Greek. Containing textual extracts and commentary from Gabriel Brotiers translation of Tacitus de moribus Germanorum by C. Cornelius and from Xenophons Expedition of Cyrus, with a description for the Needle Magnetic, and for Cannon & Gunpowder, and containing brief biographies for famous Roman and Greek historians and statesmen, including Cornelius Nepos, Themistocles, Aristides, Hannibal, and other important figures including Pausanias, Lysander and Thrasybulus; including an extract captioned Quarterly Review Jan. 1821 p. 400 and with several military comments dating to the 1830s which date this interesting book to that time. Contemporary leather over boards, marbled edges; (light browning, hinges splitting; rubbed). Armorial bookplate of Thomas James Ireland (b. 1792), Sheriff in the County of Suffolk and bookplate for bibliophile and amateur historian: Ex Libris C. J. Peacock. (early 20th c.). Interesting compilation of extracts and select passages which summarize the two important texts and include many facts on classical subjects, containing dates and brief backgrounds for emperors, various campaigns, law, religion, and a large final section on military and artillery data for various French and English brigades, including the Imperial Guard.
