Khaki cloth boards and spine with orange and red lettering on the spine and front board. Pictorial endpapers. Clean internals; internal hinges are sound and not split. 320 pp 8vo. This is the story of Martha Berry who was born into wealth in the post-Civil War South who refused to forget the poor Americans living in the southern mountains of Georgia. From a chance encounter with a poor family became Martha Berry's log-cabin school and later into Berry Schools in Rome GA where her vision of a residential school for young men and women with limited educational opportunities would help break the cycle of poverty that pervaded the rural South in the early 20th century. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
