Wrap around DJ photo and insert courtesy of Fiennes Stroud Howell Sygma. ; Photographs; 336 pages; On 9th November 1992 Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr. Michael Stroud set out from the Filchner Ice Shelf each pulling 500-pound sledges in a bid to cross the Antarctic continent without assistance. Equipment failure and injury dogged them; friendship first turned to tension and frustration, then to mutual hatred. Ninety five days later when they were airlifted out more dead than alive from the Ross Ice Shelf, they had completed the longest unsupported journey in polar history. .
