For the new format edition of John Milton's complete poetical works a new text has been prepared and edited by Professor B. A. Wright, Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Southampton. In replacing the old Everyman text it was considered that none of the existing editions was entirely suitable for this particular purpose, and the new text is based on Milton's editions and manuscripts, with modernization only of such archaisms as do not help the modern reader to read the poems as Milton intended. The editor's principles are explained in an Introduction dealing with Milton's spelling and punctuation, and textual notes draw attention to the few accepted emendations of Milton's text and textual cruxes. A select bibliography is provided.
