Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.
The specifics of the journey were written and published under various titles, including 'The Travels of Richard and John Lander'. This work is a fascinating account of African culture, geography, and 19th-century exploration. The voyage took Forbin and his traveling party to the Holy Land and Jerusalem, Syria, Athens, Constantinople, and even the Dead Sea.
His journal of the excursion covers his discoveries giving special attention to the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Sphinx. First edition, second state with half-title tipped to stub. Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (August 27, 1871 December 28, 1945) was an American novelist and journalist. He pioneered the naturalist school and is known for portraying characters whose value lies not in their moral code, but in their persistence against all obstacles, and literary situations that more closely resemble studies of nature than tales of choice and agency. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
