About This Item
Rutgers University Press, 1969. hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 9x6x1. Jacket is enclosed in protective mylar, minor wear, binding sound, internally clean. The Millstone Valley was settled in the latter part of the seventeenth century and has remained until recent years a quiet land of farms and villages with the town and university of Princeton as its center. The lands along the Millstone River, Carnegie Lake, and the Delaware and Raritan Canal still offer a haven to some of the wildlife that has been dispossessed by man's encroachment upon the countryside. Soldiers of the Revolution fought over much of this valley and made it part of American history. In the valley are treasured eighteenth-century housesâMorven, Rockingham, and many othersâand Princeton University, chartered in 1746. There are centuries-old churches whose graveyards show famous names on the tombstones; there are ancient stone bridges and Dutch barns and giant trees. There is also the spreading ugliness of jerry-built developments and high-speed highways, violated flood plains and polluted streams. Millstone Valley is a microcosm of New Jerseyâof America.
