Antwerp: Plantin/Moretus. Good with no dust jacket. 1596. First Edition. Leather. First Plantin edition. Quarto. [16], 288 [4] 289-330; [ii], 255, [iii], 259-292, [vii]. With wonderful full page engraved plates, a double page plate at 288 in the first section, along with text cuts. Corresponds to OCLC 1090203958, complete except for blanks. In what appears to be a 1700s calf leather binding with gold corner decorations, gilt and blind stamped florals to the spine compartments, gilt edges. Corners somewhat rubbed, boards reattached, original spine laid down, old fragile green silk ties still partially present. Interior more modern brown marbled end papers, title page with printers device, old ownership name in dark brown ink. Greek with Latin translation in 2 columns. The "R" quire more browned, ditto "a" quire, ditto LL quire, leaf GG has a small brown stain with a hole affecting one letter, otherwise moderate light foxing throughout, clean and unmarked with no marginalia. Lovely large margin paper. Finely illustrated. Justus Lipsius (Joost Lips; 18 October 1547 23 March 1606) was a Flemish philologist, philosopher and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism, as well as this important work on ancient Roman warfare based on writings of Polybius. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 660 pages .
