Lee's surrender at Appomattox on 9 April 1865. [Bvt. Brig.-Gen. Nathaniel] Michler's men made more than 1600 photographic sketches between the time of the river crossing and 30 July 1864. The vast number of surveys that Michler directed led to the publication [of this atlas].
