Washington, D.C.: United States Government Printing Office, 1937. First Edition. Wraps. Good. By examining the experience of the transient program, this report has been able to isolate a number of widely-held misconceptions about transients and transient relief. Analysis of the reasons why migrant families left home and of their subsequent travels reveals that they were not - as is so commonly believed - irresponsible and degraded groups addicted to chronic wandering. On the contrary, a large majority of them were habitually settled and self-supporting families dislodged by the depression and seeking reestablishment elsewhere. The families left home not only because they were in distress but also because of a reasonable expectation of an improved status at their destination." WPA Research Monograph VII, XIII, and XVIII. Tall octavo, three volumes. Original printed gray paper wrappers. Some general wear and soiling, with a previous owner's ink signature on the front panel of each volume.
