HAYWARDS HEATH: CHARLES CLARKE & CO LIMITED, 1938 Fawn Flecked cloth boards with dark brown titles to spine and front, 240 x 160 mm approx. 392 pp inc 128 pp of b/w photo plates and reproductions of trade adverts and line drawing and double page map. First Edition 1938. The copy offered has the added attribute of being warmly inscribed by the author to his friend and colleague Mr E G Hayden Editor of the Mid-Sussex Times with some original b/w photographs incl portrait of the author mounted opposite to the title page, Group photo Mid Sussex Times staff circa 1900 with names annotated to some in ink including Mr Charles Clarke - seated with the office cat on his lap, Haywards Heath Fire Brigade 1921 and copious newsprint cuttings pasted in of subject and journalism connection. Some of the illustrations in the book have also been annotated with names of the personnel and there are many pencil notes in margins of text pages. A book of great interest to past and present residents of Mid Sussex particularly any with association with the newspaper /publishers. There were two formats of this book, a soft back with fewer illustrations and this the hardback. Both editions are difficult to source. Fair( Heavy shelf wear to cloth which is starting to split at spine edges, end papers and mull sound but boards floppy from much use and the pressure placed on them by the addition of the photos and press cuttings.
