Originally published in 1946, this history of the circus by French journalist Henry Thetard was republished in 1978. At over 600 pages it is a captivating and extremely comprehensive history, beginning in Ancient Egypt and China and ending with a chapter titled "Le Cirque Depuis La Guerre" ("The Circus Since the War), written by L.-R. Dauven specifically for the republishing of the text after Thetard's death. The book is also lavishly illustrated, with historical photographs and illustrations on almost every page, including many full-color plates. A wonderful read for for anyone interested in French cultural history. Also boasts an attractive red cover with gilt lettering on the spine, and lovely decorative end papers.
